Encarnacion Sustentable

When I wasn’t volunteering at the children’s home, I was volunteering with Encarnacion Sustentable. I felt to begin with my impact was limited as I felt like lemon, I could speak very little Spanish and I didn’t understand a great deal either. But over time, I quite enjoyed meeting up with the other volunteers and learning about how they want to make Encarnacion more environmentally friendly. I went along and helped set up stalls and participated in activities that I felt I could be of use in. Some of the work was also connected to Peace Corps volunteers and their projects.

I helped Fred on his project, painting murals around the city. Having never painted any murals before, it was good fun and again I had the opportunity to meet other locals. Fred had various projects, in different neighbourhoods and the end results were amazing. I got to meet more children who were all curious to find out if I was Brazilian. Through these different projects, I had the chance to practice my Spanish and in turn, locals could practice their English.
